couch potato
couch potato：a lazy individual, addicted to television-watching. Couch potatoes can tend to become very fat and unhealthy, you know.
couch是指沙发，couch potato指的是整天窝在沙发里、边吃零食边看电视，并且懒得起来做任何其它事情的人。小心长胖哦！
举例：
Please don’t lie around like a couch potato. Get up and do something productive.
hot potato
hot potato：something that is difficult or dangerous to deal with
直译是“热土豆”，引伸意义为“烫手山芋”或“棘手问题”，指能够引起激烈争论而难以解决的问题。比如，人口问题、环境问题 、恐怖袭击问题都属于hot potato的范畴。
举例：
The abortion issue is a political hot potato in the United States.
small / big potato
small potato：something or someone insignificant
big potato：someone very important or famous, like dignitary or celebrity.
直译是小土豆，实指“小人物”，很多人喜欢自谦“I am a small potato”。对应的是big small potato，意思是“大人物”。

meat & potatoes
